Radioactive Waste Management and International Law

International law and Radioactive Waste Management by Michel Montjoie Synopsis Radioactive Waste Management has a special place, with legal consequences, in all nuclear activities, characterized by a real complexity, especially in this final phase of storage. The purpose of the book is to investigate the existence, at the international level, of a coherent and comprehensive legal framework for the prevention of cross-border risks and for compensation for nuclear damage caused by radioactive waste. The focus on international public law is justified by the fact that the field of radioactive waste management is characterized by an international framework and the establishment of state responsibility in this activity. The provisions for prevention are discussed by distinguishing between “technical” risks (safety, environmental protection) and "political" risks (nuclear safety and nuclear safeguards). In the field of damage repair, the study focuses on the adequacy of the civil nuclear liability regime to deal with the specificity of accidents involving radioactive waste. The book shows that the provisions of international law provide a solution now complete and satisfactory overall, although there are still some gaps and shortcomings.

Review 1 Following the recent nuclear disaster in Japan, concern for nuclear safety is large in the public mind. For anyone who's interested in the international and legal aspects of radioactive and hazardous waste management, I strongly recommend this book. (Posted by Blitzkrieg)

Review 2 A useful book if you are concerned about hazardous waste and want the global picture. (Posted by Skip Hire)
